Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Emergency
The California Energy Commission is saddened by the recent devastating events in Japan and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Japanese people especially those who have lost family and friends.
On Friday March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred in northeastern Japan followed almost immediately by a massive tsunami that has devastated many coastal towns. Added to these natural disasters is the crisis created by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's overheating reactors and releases of radioactive steam.
