California Initiative for Large Molecule Sustainable Fuels - Fact Sheet

Publication Number:    CEC-500-2012-FS-009

Abstract:
This project will promote research anddevelopment for renewable, low carbon, drop‐inlarge molecule fuels that are fungible withconventional petroleum based gasoline, diesel, andjet fuels, to meet Californiaʹs transportation needs.(The term “large molecule” was chosen to describethese fuels, which are mixtures of molecules largerthan ethanol, today’s most common alternativefuel. The Energy Commission and UC San Diegospecifically use this phrase, because commonterminology in this field changes rapidly.) Inaccordance with the State Alternative Fuels Plan, these large molecule fuels must be compatible withexisting fuel refining and distributioninfrastructure. Also, production of these fuelsshould not compete with food production.
