A Roadmap for PIER Research on Avian Collisions with Power Lines in California

Publication Number:    P500-02-071F

Abstract:
Power lines are a seemingly ubiquitous part of the modern landscape. Williams andColson (1989) estimated that there were approximately 588,447 kilometers (km) (365,644miles) of power lines in the United States as of 1977; and as of 2000, the Edison ElectricInstitute (2001) estimated that there were 800,000 km (500,000 miles) of transmission linesalone. While power transmission and distribution systems provide electricity to millionsof people, they pose a potential collision threat to birds in flight. Recent estimates placecollision fatalities at tens of thousands to 174 million birds annually and this magnitude offatalities is supported by mortality rates reported in the literature.
