This study produced a public access database and a summary report that are designed to help energy efficiency program planners understand technologies and behaviors in industrial and commercial energy user markets. In the database and the summary report you will find:
- Market shares of efficient technologies and processes and of their standard alternatives
- Market attributes, such as what items must be special ordered
- Information on decision-making practices in firms, related to their energy use
Under contract from the California Energy Commission, Aspen Systems, Inc. collected the data in an Industrial Purchases and Practices Survey (2001-2003), a survey of technology suppliers (2003), and from numerous publicly available studies.
The downloadable Market Share Tracking Database contains the data, which are aggregated to protect confidentiality. The database uses Microsoft Access for Windows. A version for other operating systems is not available.
Using the menu-driven database, the user chooses a product type and can view summary statistics of shares and attributes by utility service area, and by type of industry where applicable. When the choices yield too small a set to aggregate, the user gets the response "W" meaning "withheld to protect confidentiality."
The downloadable database requires that the user have ACCESS 97 or later. Users with a slower modem connection or without MS Access can request a CD containing a "runtime" version of the database, by contacting:

The downloadable Market Share Tracking Study Final Report contains selected summary information and analysis of study results. Appendices give details on how the data were collected. Most interesting is Appendix E, which reports and interprets interviews with suppliers of efficient equipment.
