AB 118 created the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (Program). The legislation authorizes the Energy Commission to spend up to $120 million per year for over seven years to develop and deploy innovative technologies that transform California's fuel and vehicle types to help attain the state's climate change policies. AB 118 directs the Energy Commission to develop sustainability goals.

To date, the Energy Commission has hosted public workshops, two Advisory Committee meetings, an informal stakeholder meeting on sustainability, numerous informal stakeholder meetings, and two SWG meetings to develop a sustainability framework to be used in implementing the Program.

Implementing regulations for the Program were adopted by the Energy Commission at the February 25, 2009 Business Meeting. Section 3101.5 of the regulations describes the sustainability goals and evaluation criteria.

This meeting will inform potential applicants and stakeholders how Energy Commission staff will interpret and apply the recently adopted regulatory goals and proposed evaluation criteria to Program applications. The discussion and presentation will address applicability, definitions, information requirements, and weighting factors. Staff will present case studies and describe key questions and data needed to assess how well projects meet sustainability goals.
