The California Energy Commission through its Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Program provided support to non-petroleum, alternative fuel infrastructure projects throughout California. Grant funding was made available to public agencies and qualified private entities that partnered with and assisted public agencies in establishing alternative fuel dispensing facilities.
The Budget Act of Fiscal Year 2000-2001 allocated $6 million to assist public agencies to establish new facilities and upgrade current facilities used for dispensing alternative motor vehicle fuels.
The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Program conducted three solicitations and awarded a total of $5.3 million dollars in cost-share funding to 32 qualified applicants. These funds were distributed to 44 non-petroleum based fuel facilities including, liquefied and compressed natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas. The amount of funding was determined based on the Total Project Cost and cost-share.
The first and second solicitations funded projects in establishing new facilities, with a maximum funding allocation of $250,000. The final solicitation awarded new projects a maximum funding allocation of $100,000 and up to $30,000 for facility upgrades and expansions.
The program ended in 2002 and has not been extended because of the state budget crisis.
