Joint Workshop on Southern California Electricity Infrastructure and Reliability Issues
As part of the 2013 Integrated Energy Policy Report (2013 IEPR), the California Energy Commission’s (Energy Commission) Chair will jointly conduct a workshop with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on the preliminary reliability plan for Los Angeles Basin and San Diego prepared by staff of the Energy Commission, the CPUC, and the California Independent System Operator (California ISO) in consultation with other state agency staff and the affected utilities. Since the steam generator tube rupture in January of 2012 in Unit 3 of San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station (San Onofre), the Governor’s Office has lead a coordinated effort to ensure reliability of the electricity grid in Southern California for the summer of 2012 and 2013. On June 7, 2013, Southern California Edison announced the closure of San Onofre. The genesis of the preliminary reliability plan was the announcement of the permanent shut down, and the agency staff working group stemmed from the previously coordinated summer reliability work. Commissioners from the Energy Commission, commissioners from the CPUC, and executives from the California Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board, the California ISO, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and other agencies may also attend.
