Working at the Energy Commission
Examinations at the California Energy Commission
Examinations are given both by the State Personnel Board (SPB) and by individual departments. The examination announcement will tell you where to apply.
Examinations are open to any person meeting the minimum qualifications described in the examination announcement. Promotional Examinations may require that you be a civil service employee and have other specific requirements.

Examination Tips
- Apply using the Standard State Application Form 678.
- Make sure you completely identify your experience and education that meets the minimum qualifications described in the examination bulletin, using similar phrases and language.
- Find additional exam listings at the State Personnel Board's Online Employment Center
- See "Your Guide Through the Selection Process" for assistance in preparing for civil service examinations
- Be patient. You must pass the examination and be reachable on the list before applying and interviewing for open positions.
- After taking a test, find your rank and score on the State Personnel Board's site. You need your Candidate identification number which is displayed on all examination correspondence mailed from the Examination Unit. (Note that the Commission is listed as "State Energy Resource Conservation and Development Commission")
