Redwood Coast Green Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Type of organization: Workforce Investment Board.
Type of training: Classes for dislocated workers and the long-term unemployed in the Building and Systems Construction and Maintenance industry and the Management and Innovation Services industry. Graduating students will be prepared for entry-level work as energy efficiency building auditors, HVAC installers, environmental compliance officers, green plumbing technicians, solar installers, and general maintenance and repair workers.
Area served: Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.
Location of training: College of the Redwoods, Eureka, California.
Estimated trainees: 100
Instruction details: Training will be offered in two series of classes, one for green building, and one for green plumbing. Classes lead to 7 green skill certifications:
- Green Building Professional;
- Building Analyst Professional;
- Envelope Professional;
- Solar Photovoltaic Installer;
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) Professional;
- Green Plumbing Professional;
Participants will enter and complete training in cohorts of their peers to encourage team work and networking. All cohorts will include union orientation to understand the opportunities, benefits and operations of union apprenticeship programs. Students seeking self-employment will receive business start-up and management training.
Result of classes: Students will be placed in on-the-job training, and then supported through the process of permanent hiring.
More about the organization: Del Norte and Humboldt counties are collaborating with 14 partners in this re-training program: College of the Redwoods; Eureka Adult School; The Job Market (Humboldt County one-stop operator); Workforce Center – Del Norte; City of Arcata; Yurok Indian Housing Authority; North Coast Small Business Resource Center; DANCO Builders; Redwood Coast Energy Authority; Redwood Community Action Agency; A-Step program for Indian youth employment; Greenway Partners, Inc.; Plan It Green; and the Carpenter's Union Local 751.
