Green Building and Clean Energy Pre-Apprenticeship

Oakland Green Jobs Corps


Type of organization: Accredited California Community College.

Type of training: The expanded Oakland Green Jobs Corp is a job-training and employment pipeline providing "green pathways out of poverty" for low-income adults in Oakland, and trains technicians to serve on the frontlines of water and resource conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Area served: The program serves the East Bay region, including Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Location of training: Laney College (near Lake Merritt) and the Cypress Mandela Training Center (near the West Oakland Bart station).

Estimated trainees: 120

Instruction details: The students at Laney College will take a 6-month, 18.5 credit course in environmental literacy, energy auditing, energy efficiency retrofitting, weatherization and green building.

The students at Cypress Mandela Training Center will take a 16-week pre-apprenticeship course as well as environmental literacy and construction rehabilitation classes.

Result of classes: Students will receive basic training in water conservation techniques, such as greywater systems, and renewable energy including solar, and receive in-depth training in energy auditing and retrofitting as well as the general construction rehabilitation skills that accompany energy efficiency upgrades.

With this comprehensive training program, graduates will be eligible for entry level positions in renewables, water and energy efficiency.

Job opportunities include:

  • Energy Auditor;
  • Energy Efficiency Retrofitting;
  • Weatherization Specialist;
  • Solar Installer.

More about the organization: This program is a collaborative partnership with Laney College, Oakland Workforce Investment Board, Cypress Mandela Training Center, the Regional Technical Training Center, the Spanish Speaking Citizen's Foundation, Civicorps Schools, Allen Temple Job Training, Urban University, Greywater Action, Grid Alternatives and Growth Sector. This team of training and support organizations will offer a robust green building pre-apprenticeship program as an expansion of the existing Oakland Green Jobs Corp.
