Manufacturers of DER equipment are shifting focus to create packaged CHP systems, where the heat recovery hardware is integrated with the power generation equipment and sold as a complete product. Currently, a large number of packaged CHP systems using reciprocating engines are becoming commercially available. Microturbine manufacturers are also adding heat recovery to their products. As the emerging technologies (i.e., fuel cells, Stirling engines) become more economical, integrated heat recovery will be added to the final commercial product.
