Wind power is a viable energy source with wide-ranging applications for distributed generation. Wind farms can be sized for small- or large-scale power generation. Wind power is becoming popular in developing countries due to the fast and simple installation and low maintenance requirements once installed. It is beneficial to remote areas using a small local electricity grid that are unable to connect to a large-scale electric grid. Also, the land can still be used for animal grazing and some agriculture operations.
In 1995, California's installed wind generation capacity was equal to 0.5% of the total dependable installed capacity.
