    Overview

The Santa Rita Jail is the largest consumer of energy of all the Alameda Count government buildings, and the County wanted to find ways to reduce energy expenditures. In the spring of 2002, Alameda County completed the larges rooftop solar system in the nation at this facility. It was commissioned in three phases: 1) a 519 kW system on top of six of the eighteen housing units, 2) 131 kW, 3) 530 kW. All together they produce 1.18 MW of power under peak sunlight conditions. The first year savings was $425,000, and the lifetime (25 years) savings is expected to be over $15 million.
