Projects
Sacramento Regional Transit District Grant For the Bus Maintenance Facility 2 Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Equipment Project
The Sacramento Regional Transit District will install three compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensers at its bus maintenance facility #2. The three new 1,500 standard cubic feet per minute CNG dispensers will support 40 buses. Future transit needs are projected to increase by 150 percent; these dispensers are needed to accommodate the expected growth in bus services. The fueling station will also be available to Twin Rivers Unified School District and neighboring transit agencies.
Grant Amount
$500,000
Match Funding
$4,200,000 from the project’s participants.
Project Participants
The Sacramento Regional Transit District operates 64 bus routes and 37.5 miles of light rail, covering a 418 square-mile service area. Buses and light rail run 365 days a year using 76 light rail vehicles, 182 buses powered by CNG and 11 shuttle vans. The Transit District will oversee this CNG project, own and operate the station, and secure partnerships with nearby transit agencies to use the station. It has prepared the Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration required under CEQA.
The Twin Rivers School District will provide information about its fueling needs and utilize the station to fuel school buses.
Project Benefits
As a transit application, the project has the potential to reduce vehicle miles traveled in single occupancy vehicles. The CNG-powered buses supported by the station will displace over 2.6 million gallons of petroleum-based diesel fuel each year, in the process producing 21 percent fewer emissions than similar diesel vehicles and reducing emissions by more than 7,600 tons of CO2 per year.
