QUALLION LLC GRANT FOR PILOT AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING LINE FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERY MODULES

<< Return to Projects

Quallion LLC, a California-based Lithium ion (Li-ion) battery manufacturer, is building a Li-ion Battery Module Assembly Line Automation Pilot Project with grant ARV-10-010 for $6,914,072. The project includes industrial construction and is located in Sylmar, CA. The automation machinery will be custom designed to manufacture and assemble the parts of cylindrical AA-sized batteries. Groups of these battery cells are electrically interconnected 1kWh modules about the size of an ordinary car battery. The contacts inside are robot welded. Automated software will monitor the crucial first charge/discharge cycles in the lab.

These mass-produce, standardized, rechargeable components can be used for electric vehicles, truck idling power, and other applications.

Grant Amount

$6,914,072

Match Funding

$6,950,265 from Quallion LLC.

Project Benefits

Quallion will reduce its battery manufacturing costs, encouraging the use of electric vehicles. Once deployed, each battery module can reduce carbon emissions by 68 percent per vehicle.  The project will generate 50 to 100 temporary and 100 to 200 permanent jobs during the four-year term.
