Quallion LLC Grant For Pilot Automated Manufacturing Line for Lithium-Ion Battery Modules
Quallion LLC, a battery manufacturer based in Sylmar, CA, will develop a way to mass-produce standardized, lower-cost Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicles.
Simple single cell or small lithium-ion batteries have been a mainstay in cell phones, laptops and other electronics for years, but electric vehicles require much larger battery systems with thousands of cells. That’s why batteries remain the single most expensive component in an electric vehicle, accounting for up to 50 percent of the purchase price.
By automating the process to mass produce Li-ion battery modules for vehicles, Quallion figures it can bring down the cost. There is no vehicle technology standard at this time; the company will standardize both the size and design of batteries and battery modules, creating a pilot scale manufacturing line capable of producing 10,000 one-kilowatt/hour Li-ion modules. This pilot line will make Quallion a ground-breaker in the development and production of Li-ion battery systems.
Grant Amount
$1,026,072
Match Funding
$1,026,072 from Quallion LLC.
Project Participants
California –based Quallion will be the sole participant in the project, although it uses local suppliers for a vast majority of its operations.
Project Benefits
Quallion will reduce its battery manufacturing costs, encouraging the use of electric vehicles. Once deployed, each battery module can reduce carbon emissions by 68 percent per vehicle. The project will generate 50 to 100 temporary and 100 to 200 permanent jobs in the next three years.
