Electric Vehicles International (EVI) Electric Vehicle Manufacturing

<< Return to Projects

Electric Vehicles International (EVI) has an agreement to design, develop, and deploy a clean, state-of-the-art range-extended EV power train technology for medium-duty trucks.

Grant Amount

The Energy Commission is awarding $3,881,244 from the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program funds. This agreement supplements the electric vehicle manufacturing award.

Match Amount

The project partners are providing $6,825,602 in match and in-kind funding.

Project Participants

EVI will provide the lead vehicle development and production role for this project.

Light Engineering will provide their SmartTorq motor/generator. Valence Technology will provide lithium-phosphate batteries to power the proposed vehicle.

Altec Industries will supply equipment and provide engineering support.

Pacific Gas & Electric (and potentially other utilities and agencies) will provide utility vehicles from their fleet to be retrofitted with the EV powertrain.

Project Benefits

An automated manufacturing process should cut vehicle costs by 30 percent. The manufacturing process will immediately create 50 permanent jobs in economically depressed Stockton, while a commercial scale plant is expected to create an additional 375 jobs. This project will produce medium and heavy-duty electric vehicles that should cut emissions by up to 68 percent per vehicle.
