NOTICE OF STAFF WORKSHOP

EVALUATING THE COST OF INTEGRATING RENEWABLES:
METHODOLOGY & ANALYSIS RESULTS

Agenda for Workshop

The staff of the California Energy Commission will hold a workshop:

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2003
Beginning at 9:00 a.m.
CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION
1516 Ninth Street
Hearing Room A
Sacramento, California

The Energy Commission staff invites interested parties to attend a workshop on Phase I: Findings and Results of Costs of Integrating Renewables. The workshop will be presented by the Renewables Portfolio Standards (RPS) Integration Methods Group, led by the California Wind Energy Collaborative (CWEC) and includes staff and researchers from California Independent System Operator (CA ISO), Oak Ridge National Laboratory and National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

As the second of a series of RPS integration workshops, the results and findings generated from two proposed evaluation methodologies presented in April 2003 will be discussed. Any applicable comments will be considered for the following phases of the integration cost study.

Background

With the adoption of the California RPS under Senate Bill 1078, the Energy Commission is supporting a multi-phase study to define and quantify integration costs. In the first phase, integration costs for existing renewable generators will be determined using a methodology that is fair, transparent, and independent. The second phase will evaluate the effects of generation technology, geography, climate, and level of grid penetration on the valuation of renewables. In the last phase, a standardized methodology for calculating integration costs as part of a bid selection process will be recommended.

The Energy Commission encourages members of the public to submit written comments. Attachment A provides an agenda for the workshop.
