NEWS RELEASE CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION For Immediate Release: November 16, 1994 For More Info Contact: Rob Schlichting, (916) 654-5159 STATE LOAN PROVIDES CLOVERDALE WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS The California Energy Commission today approved a $22,113 low-interest loan that will allow the City of Cloverdale to install energy-efficient lighting and other energy-saving improvements in city buildings. The loan, made through the Energy Conservation Assistance Act, will enable Cloverdale to replace outdated lighting fixtures in City Hall, the library, the police and fire station and the city park's recreation hall. In some locations, time clocks, motion detectors and photocells will be installed to turn off lights, heat and air conditioning when not needed. All told, the improvements should cut the city's utility bill by over $7,100 a year. "The projects were identified last year as part of the Energy Partnership Program, through which the state Energy Commission provides local governments with technical assistance in ways to cut energy waste," said Carol Giovanatto, Assistant to Cloverdale's City Manager. Giovanatto said that some of the savings seemed surprisingly large. "We discovered that, in the library alone, we can save over $100 a year in energy costs by replacing our old incandescent exit signs with more efficient models," she said. In addition to energy savings, Giovanatto said that Cloverdale's maintenance costs will also be reduced once the new lighting is installed. "The latest generation of energy-efficient florescent bulbs are longer-lasting. That means additional savings, since we won't have to pay to have them replaced as frequently," she said. The state's Energy Conservation Assistance Act funds low-interest loans to local governments, schools and other agencies willing to invest in energy efficiency. From the savings on its utility bills alone, Cloverdale should be able to repay the loan in just over three years. ##### Carol Giovanatto Assistant to the City Manager, Cloverdale, CA (707) 894-2521 Energy Commission Contact: Rob Schlichting, Information Officer (916) 654-5159 End of file File name: 94-11-16_Cloverdale Energy Loa
