CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: November 16, 1994 More Information Contact: Rob Schlichting - (916) 654-5159 STATE LOAN PROVIDES SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS The California Energy Commission today approved a $60,364 low-interest loan that will allow San Bernardino Valley College to install energy efficient lighting in three buildings on its 15,000-student campus. Total budget for the energy-saving project is $119,522. In September 1994, the Energy Commission awarded the San Bernardino Community College District $59,158 in federal grant money. The just-approved loan gives the school the rest of the funds needed to complete a lighting upgrade in the Chemistry and Liberal Arts buildings, as well as Snyder Gymnasium. Dr. Norman Smith, Executive Director of Facilities, Planning and Administrative Services for the San Bernardino Community College District, said that the improvements should save the college more than $22,300 annually on its utility bill. "Because of the age of its buildings, Valley College offers many opportunities to save on energy costs through the use of modern, up-to-date technology," Smith said. Four of the 20 buildings on campus were built in 1929, while others were added in the 1950s. "Our newest building was constructed in the 1960s," he said. Today's loan was funded with money from the state's Energy Conservation Assistance Act, which gives low-interest loans to local governments, schools and other agencies willing to invest in energy efficiency. Energy savings from the project should allow the college district to repay the loan in approximately three years. The loan will be used to match the federal cost-sharing grant from the Institutional Conservation Program, which encourages reduction of energy consumption and cost in public and nonprofit schools and hospitals. ##### Dr. Norman Smith, Executive Director of Facilities, Planning and Administrative Services, San Bernardino Community College District (909) 381-8013 Energy Commission Contact: Claudia Chandler, Assistant Executive Director, (916) 654-4989 End of file File name: 94-11-16_San_Bernardino_Colleg
