The resolution from the California Energy Commission commends Woodland for "reducing energy use...saving revenue for public services, and setting an example for all businesses and residents in the community." "Woodland has shown a strong commitment to cut energy costs in city-owned facilities," acknowledged Commissioner Jananne Sharpless of the Energy Commission. "Since 1993, city officials have worked closely with the Commission to reduce energy waste." Through the Commission's Energy Partnership Program, Woodland conducted a detailed survey of the energy use in a number of its buildings. As a result, the city's public works department recently completed replacing or modifying 2,891 outdated lighting fixtures with high-efficiency fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts at City Hall, Police Station, Library, Municipal Corporation Yard, Municipal Swimming Pool and Community Swim Center. Motion sensors were also installed in many rooms to turn off lights when the rooms were unoccupied. "We're proud to say we've made our buildings more comfortable, and we've achieved great energy savings in the process," said Woodland Project Manager Sherri Martin. She estimated that the improved lighting would cut the city's annual energy bill by almost $40,000 per year. The energy efficiency project was funded with a low-interest loan from the Energy Commission. It also qualified for a $33,000 energy rebate from the city's utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company. "With the PG&E rebate shaved off of the $155,000 we spent on the project, the city could recoup our investment in a little over three years," Martin said. Scott Matthews, the Commission's Deputy Director for Energy Efficiency, and Daryl Mills, Public Sector Project Manager, will join in making the presentation of the resolution on behalf of the Commission. # # # For more information, contact: Sherri Martin, Project Manager, City of Woodland, (916) 661-5955 Rob Schlichting, California Energy Commission, (916) 654-5159 End of file File Name: 95-02-17_City_of_Woodland_Awar
