************************************************************ NEWS RELEASE FROM TIM LESLIE SENATOR, FIRST DISTRICT ************************************************************ For Immediate Release Contact: Roger Wildermuth March 9, 1995 Phone: (916) 445-5788 OROVILLE ELEMENTARY GETS ENERGY GRANT Sacramento -- Senator Tim Leslie (R - Carnelian Bay) announced today that the California Energy Commission has awarded a $16,800 matching grant to Oroville Elementary School District to make improvements that are expected to save the district's taxpayer's $6,700 each year. The grant, which does not have to be repaid, will allow the city to install energy efficient lights, fixtures, and motors and install an Energy Management System at its Bird Street Elementary School. According to officials with the Energy Commission, the improvements will save the district and its taxpayers over $6,700 annually in reduced utility bills.. "This award is a win-win situation for everyone involved," Leslie said. "It will cut energy costs and save taxpayers' money. In a period of tight fiscal budgets, cost-effective solutions like this are vital." The Energy Commission's program encourages reduction of energy consumption and cost in local government facilities. schools and hospitals by providing cost-sharing loans for both technical studies and installation of energy efficient equipment. Since 1978, California has awarded loans totaling about $64 million. District Superintendent Dr. Donald Remley also praised the award. "Since Bird Street Elementary runs on a year-round schedule, energy efficiency is additionally important here," Remley said.
