"I'm a firm believer in using the latest, proven state-of-the-art technology to improve our environment," said Senator Mountjoy (R-Monrovia). "I'm also very happy that the Rowland students will be riding in safer, more efficient buses." The CEC is providing 174 new buses around the state in the third phase of its efficient-energy demonstration program for school buses. The Rowland district is scheduled to receive three new advanced diesel-powered buses. "We're glad to get these three buses from the Energy Commission," said Rowland USD Deputy Superintendent Richard Angarola. "We've been happy participating in the second phase when we received three diesel and five methanol buses. And we're looking forward to working with the Commission in the third phase." Buses powered by diesel, natural gas and electricity are available in the demonstration program. They replace older school buses built before 1977, which will now be sold for scrap or parts. The new buses are equipped with additional emergency exits and an advanced fire-extinguishing system in the engine compartment. Rowland USD is one of more than 200 school districts that applied to participate in the demonstration program. # # # For more information contact: Richard Angarola Rowland Unified School District _ 818-965-2541 Bob Aldrich Information Officer, California Energy Commission _ 916-654-4993 end of file File Name: 95-04-05_Senator_Craven_Release_on_School_Bus_Program
