****************************************************************** NEWS RELEASE FROM THE CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION ****************************************************************** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT May 12, 1995 Bob Aldrich, 916-654-4993 $3 MILLION IN RD&D CO-FUNDING AVAILABLE Energy technology companies have a public sector partner that is offering co-funding for research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects. The California Energy Commission has nearly three million dollars available to co-fund projects that make energy technologies more efficient or help develop alternative sources of energy. (Transportation and geothermal related technologies are funded through other Commission programs and are not eligible for ETAP.) Up to $750,000 is available, for each project, in repayable research contracts or low-interest loans. This is the eleventh year for the CommissionÕs Energy Technologies Advancement Program (ETAP). This year, the Commission will conduct its search in two parts for prospective partners: 1) Companies may first submit Òpre-applicationsÓ and receive suggestions from ETAP staff on how to improve their projectÕs potential for success. 2) The Commission will then send out its request for proposals (RFP). Once the RFP is released, ETAP staff will not be able to give advice on projects. Since 1984, when the program was created by the Legislature, ETAP has funded 64 projects. A total of more than $20 million in state funds has been matched by more than $132 million from project sponsors. The projects, to date, have created or retained research, development and manufacturing jobs in the state. In the past 10 years, 60 percent of the awards have been made to small businesses, 30 percent have gone to large businesses, and the remaining 10 percent to local government and other sources. Historically, awards have ranged from as little as $25,000 to more than $1.25 million.
