GOVERNOR DAVIS ANNOUNCES $3.7 MILLION
IN ENERGY LOANS FOR LOS ANGELES AREA SCHOOLS

Installation of Energy Efficient Fixtures Will Provide Savings of $462,000 in Yearly Energy Bills

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced nearly $3.5 million in energy loans to the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Chaminade College Preparatory Schools in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles.

"These low-interest loans will improve energy efficiency in schools while enhancing the learning environment for California students," said Governor Davis. "I am committed to improving California’s energy efficiency and developing alternative and renewable forms of energy."

Los Angeles Unified School District administrators will use five loans totaling $3,490,925 to improve lighting in 30 schools and facilities. Among the energy efficient fixtures and controls to be installed are new T-8 lamps, electronic ballasts, compact fluorescent fixtures, light emitting diode exit signs and photo sensors. In some schools, old air conditioning units and hot water boilers will be replaced with newer, much more efficient ones.

Combined, these loans will enable the school district to cut its energy bill by more than $436,000 a year. From the energy savings alone, the district can repay all five loans in eight years.

A $200,000 loan will allow the Chaminade College Preparatory Schools in Chatsworth and West Hills to switch to low flow showerheads as well as efficient lighting and air conditioning controls. By saving $26,000 in energy bills every year, the school of 1,700 students in sixth through eight grades can pay back the loan in less than 8 years.

The bulk of the financial assistance to the schools was made through the California Energy Commission’s Energy Conservation Assistance Act account. The Act provides low-interest loans to local governments, public and private non-profit schools and hospitals, public care institutions and other agencies willing to invest in energy efficiency.
