GOVERNOR DAVIS CALLS ON STATE AGENCIES, LOCAL RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES TO HELP CUT POWER CONSUMPTION
SACRAMENTO Governor Gray Davis today issued directives calling for State government entities to curtail electricity usage in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout this afternoon and tomorrow.
In a statement prepared for Bay Area radio stations, Governor Davis said:
"Severe hot weather, compounded by electrical problems in the Bay Area, has created sporadic energy supply problems in parts of the State. To reduce the drain on energy during this heat wave, Ive directed State agencies and facilities to raise interior temperatures to 78 degrees and to institute energy management practices, including:
Closing windows and doors to prevent loss of air conditioning.
Eliminating use of portable electrical devices like fans and microwaves.
Closing blinds and window coverings on all south and west facing windows.
Turning off lights in unoccupied rooms.
Reducing overhead lighting.
Turn off all decorative indoor and outdoor lighting.
Shutting off computers that are not in use.
Consolidating use of photocopies or printers.
"Im calling on citizens and businesses to undertake similar efforts to reduce their consumption of electricity. If everyone pitches in and does their part, we can weather this weather."
