Fairfield Student Artist
Is Energy Art Contest Winner

Sacramento--A student from Golden West Middle School in Fairfield will have her artwork displayed in California's Energy 2001 Calendar, according to an announcement made today by State Assemblywoman Helen Thomson (D-Vacaville).

Eighth grader Kylie Gohsman entered the California Energy Commission's calendar art contest that asked young artists to envision energy in the coming century. She created a colorful watercolor poster entitled "Natural Energy" that depicts homes along a hillside, interspersed with wind turbines producing electricity. On a highway at the bottom of the hill, futuristic vehicles speed along using power from the sun, while old gas-powered, polluting vehicles lag behind.

"My picture is about how I would like to see the future houses being energized by wind and cars being fueled by the sun," Kylie explained. "It says that all the cars that help the future can go and all cars that ruin it are not allowed to. We only want good things for our future!"

"Kylie's colorful artwork emphasizes our desire for a clean environment," said Assemblywoman Thomson. "For this year's art contest, the Energy Commission received over 1300 entries from school children all over the state. Kylie is one of 12 young artists selected to illustrate the Energy 2001 Calendar, to be printed later this year."

Students whose artwork is selected will receive a $200 United States Savings Bond. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $50 cash award for purchase of educational materials for the classroom.

The Energy 2001 Calendar art contest is underwritten by a consortium of public and private organizations.
