Orangevale Student Artist
Is Energy Art Contest Winner

Sacramento--A student from Pershing Elementary School in Orangevale will have her artwork displayed in California's Energy 2001 Calendar, according to an announcement made today by State Senator Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento).

Fifth grader Christine Chen entered the California Energy Commission's calendar art contest that asked young artists to envision energy in the coming century. She created a whimsical drawing entitled "An Energy User Can Also be An Energy Producer." It shows talking trees and flowers alongside a road with smiling families driving in electric cars powered by the sun.

"Energy is very important in our lives," Christine explained. "One major source is the sun, an endless supply of energy. Like a tree has always used the sun's rays for food, the solar energy plate uses the sun's rays for energy. We need to use energy carefully, so there is enough for generations to come."

"Like many students, Christine is not only aware of energy, she has a positive outlook on its future," said Senator Ortiz. "She can be proud to be one of 12 young artists selected to illustrate the Energy 2001 Calendar, to be printed later this year."

Students whose artwork is selected will receive a $200 United States Savings Bond. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $50 cash award for purchase of educational materials for the classroom.

The Energy 2001 Calendar art contest is underwritten by a consortium of public and private organizations.
