Wheatland Student Artist
Is Energy Art Contest Winner

Sacramento--A student from the Bear River School in Wheatland will have his artwork displayed in California's Energy 2001 Calendar, according to an announcement made today by State Senator Tim Leslie (R-Lake Tahoe).

Eighth grader Chris McNeal entered the California Energy Commission's calendar art contest that asked young artists to envision energy in the coming century. He created a colorful, five-panel design that depicts wind energy, from the point of generation with wind turbines on a rural hillside, through transmission lines that carry the electricity into homes and appliances.

"I wanted to show that wind turbines are a very good energy source," Chris explained. "They are very efficient and they don't hurt our environment. I think wind turbines will probably have an impact on California's energy future."

"Chris' artwork emphasizes his desire for a clean environment," said Senator Leslie. "He is one of 12 young artists selected to illustrate the Energy 2001 Calendar, to be printed later this year."

For this year's contest, the Energy Commission received over 1300 entries from school children all over the state in grades three through eight.

Students whose artwork is selected will receive a $200 United States Savings Bond. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $50 cash award for purchase of educational materials for the classroom.

The Energy 2001 Calendar art contest is underwritten by a consortium of public and private organizations.
