San Leandro Student Artist
Is Energy Art Contest Winner
Sacramento--A student from Bancroft Middle School in San Leandro will have her artwork displayed in California's Energy 2001 Calendar, according to an announcement made today by State Assemblywoman Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro).
Seventh grader Anly Tsang entered the California Energy Commission's calendar art contest that asked young artists to envision energy in the coming century. She created a vivid watercolor design of an Earth in space, basking the sun's rays and powered by renewable energy sources like sun, wind and water.
"What I am trying to show in my picture is that there are many ways to save energy," Anly explained. "We can use solar cells to charge batteries to run lights and telephones. Buildings can be powered by hydroelectricity. Windmills can also provide electricity for our state. The most important thing is that if we don't start saving energy, our whole planet will be polluted."
"Entitled "Our Future," Anly's stylized artwork colorfully celebrates clean, renewable energy for transportation and home use," said Assemblywoman Corbett. "Anly is one of 12 young artists whose work was selected to illustrate the Energy 2001 Calendar. She can be proud of her accomplishment Ñ the Energy Commission received over 1300 entries this year from school children all over the State in grades three through eight."
Students whose artwork is selected will receive a $200 United States Savings Bond. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $50 cash award for purchase of educational materials for the classroom.
The Energy 2001 Calendar art contest is underwritten by a consortium of public and private organizations.
