Workshop Tackles Reduction of Diesel Emissions

What: A workshop will be held to assess national efforts to make diesel fuel and engine exhaust cleaner and friendlier to the environment.
Who: Speakers invited to the 6th Diesel Engine Emissions Reduction Workshop are led by California Air Resources Board Chairman Alan C. Lloyd, U. S. Department of Energy Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Technologies Tom J. Gross, California Energy Commission Chairman William J. Keese, and Energy Commissioners Michal C. Moore and Robert Pernell.
When: Sunday, August 20 - Thursday, August 24, 2000
Where: Hyatt Islandia Hotel in San Diego's Mission Bay
Why: The workshop seeks to bring together federal and state agency experts involved with diesel engines as users, regulators, or in research and development with the diesel engine manufacturers, the national laboratories, academia, environmentalists, and health experts.

A highlight of the workshop on Tuesday, August 22, 2000, will be an afternoon demonstration (ride and drive) of a diesel-powered sports utility vehicle. The engine is quiet, clean and powerful but gets a 50 percent better fuel economy than its gasoline-powered counterpart. The demonstration is part of a technical update on the emerging diesel engine emissions reduction technologies.

The Thursday workshop will feature a panel discussion amoong environmentalists and representatives of the diesel industry.
