Linking Water and Energy A Joint Agency Symposium

Sacramento - On Tuesday, March 28, staff from the California Energy Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission, the California Department of Water Resources, the California Independent System Operator, and other state representatives will discuss options to improve the efficiency of California's water and energy systems.

Water-related energy use accounts for nearly 20 percent of the state's electricity consumption, one-third of the non-power plant natural gas consumption and millions of gallons of diesel fuel. In addition, the state's water system provides significant amounts of electricity to the state's grid. As demand for water and energy increase in the state, it is critical to pursue mutually beneficial strategies that improve both systems. In the 2005 Integrated Energy Policy Report, the Energy Commission recommended several actions that can be implemented today to improve efficiency of and develop resources in the state's water system.

This symposium will identify and address ways that California's water and energy utilities can work together to mutually manage water and energy use more efficiently. No decisions will be made at this public information meeting.

Panel discussions will look at the relationship between water and energy use. Participants will discuss how water utilities can reduce energy consumption, and examine research and water regulatory polices. Members of the public will have an opportunity to offer comments at the end of the panel discussions.
