Young Artists Win Recognition,
in 2008 Energy Calendar Art Contest
Sacramento - In classrooms across the State, young artists are illustrating their vision of the ways energy will improve our lives and the environment in the new century. They are creating artwork for the 2008 Energy Calendar, the California Energy Commission's latest student art contest.
Twelve illustrations will be chosen in the competition for the Energy Commission's Energy 2008 calendar. In addition to seeing their art displayed throughout the year, each of the 12 winning artists from grades three through eight will be awarded a $250 U.S. Savings Bond. Their teachers will receive cash awards to purchase educational materials for their classrooms. All participating students who submit pictures will receive a California Energy Commission certificate of participation and other prizes.
Entries are due at the Energy Commission by Friday, April 20, 2007.
"California's future depends on its students being literate in science; however, if a child's interest hasn't been piqued by the eighth grade, we've lost them," said Claudia Chandler, Energy Commission Assistant Executive Director. "The poster contest is a fun way for students to explore ideas like cars powered by electricity and fuel cells. We encourage them to see a 21st century fueled by pollution-free energy sources such as wind, geothermal, or solar technologies."
Flyers announcing the contest and presenting the rules have been mailed to more than 2,000 public and private schools. Only California students are eligible to participate. Posters must be mailed to:
