The California Energy Commission has scheduled a site visit and informational hearing for the proposed Palmdale Hybrid Power Project in the city of Palmdale in Los Angeles County. Members of the public are invited to participate.

When: Thursday, December 4, 2008

Where: Council Chambers, Palmdale City Hall, 38300 Sierra Highway Suite B

Free transportation for the site visit leaves from City Hall at 2:45 p.m. The public informational hearing begins at 4:00 p.m.

Who: Commission Chairman Jackalyne Pfannenstiel, presiding member of the committee that will ensure that the project meets the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act will lead the site visit and informational hearing. These steps are the first in a formal process that allows the public, governmental agencies and other interested parties to participate in the review of the planned power plant.

What: The Palmdale project, owned by the City of Palmdale, consists of a hybrid of natural gas-fired combined cycle generating facility integrated with solar thermal generating equipment to be developed on about 377 acres in the city's northern portion. Ten percent of the plant's 617-megawatt output will come from its solar thermal component.

Why: If approved by the Commission, the project will start construction towards a planned commercial operation in the summer of 2013.

Throughout the project's 12-month licensing review, the Energy Commission will conduct public workshops and hearings on the proposed plant to determine whether it should be certified for a license and under what set of conditions.
