Hearing on intervener's petition regarding Carlsbad Energy Center
scheduled for December 15th

What: The Energy Commission Committee reviewing the proposed Carlsbad Energy Center Project will hold a hearing to resolve an issue between intervener (Center for Biological Diversity) and the applicant for the proposed 588-megawatt power plant.

The Committee will hear further arguments on the Center's petition directing the applicant to respond to data requests concerning the facility and the applicant's denial of the requests.

When: Monday, December 15th, beginning at 1 pm.

Where: Hearing Room B, California Energy Commission, 1516 Ninth Street, Sacramento.

Why: On September 26, 2008, the Center issued data requests to the plant applicant, Carlsbad Energy Center, LLC (). On October 14, 2008, Applicant filed objections to each of those requests. The Center responded on November 10, 2008, by filing a Petition for Order Directing Response to Data Requests for all of the data requests. After the Committee reviewed the briefs filed by the parties, it found that further argument and discussion of the intervener's petition is necessary.

The Carlsbad Energy Center Project is being proposed for a 23-acre portion of the existing Encina Power Station (EPS) in Carlsbad. The natural gas powered CECP facility will feature high-efficiency technology that will be dry-cooled, eliminating the need for once-through ocean water cooling. If the CECP is licensed, EPS Units 1, 2 and 3 will be permanently retired.
