Attention City and Assignment Editors:

Public workshop to be held on
Beacon Solar Project preliminary staff assessment

What: The staff of the California Energy Commission will hold a public workshop on the Preliminary Staff Assessment (PSA) for the 250-megawatt Beacon Solar Energy Project in Kern County. Members of the public are invited to attend.

When: Tuesday, April 14, 2009, starting at 8:00 a.m.

Where: California City Council Chambers - City Hall, 21000 Hacienda Blvd. California City

Who: The workshop will allow the applicant, staff, intervenors, interested agencies and the public to discuss the PSA on the proposed plant. From the workshop dialogue and written comments received, Energy Commission staff will revise the document where appropriate and publish a Final Staff Assessment (FSA).

Why: The project proposed by Beacon Solar LLC, a subsidiary of Florida Power and Light Energy is a concentrated solar electric generating facility proposed on 2,000 plus acres in eastern Kern County, California. The project would use parabolic trough solar thermal technology to produce electrical power from a steam turbine generator, fed from a heat exchanger. If licensed by the Energy Commission, the solar thermal facility will begin construction in late 2009 or first quarter of 2010, with commercial operations beginning in approximately the fourth quarter of 2011.

Throughout the project's licensing review, the Energy Commission will conduct public workshops and hearings in Kern County on the proposed plant to determine whether it should be certified for a license and under what set of conditions.
