Status Conference December 1 for Beacon Solar Energy Project
The California Energy Commission Committee reviewing the 250-megawatt Beacon Solar Energy Project in eastern Kern County will hold a status conference. Members of the public are welcome to attend and offer comments.
When: Tuesday December 1, 2009 beginning at 10 a.m.
Where: Hearing Room A, California Energy Commission, 1516 Ninth Street, Sacramento, California.
Who: The plant applicant, Beacon Solar LLC, a subsidiary of Florida Power and Light Energy filed a motion before the Committee to conduct a status conference in place of a previously scheduled pre-hearing conference. On November 18, the Committee granted that motion.
Why: At the status conference the Committee will discuss and define a refined water plan for the solar thermal project with Commission staff, California Unions for Reliable Energy and interested members of the public. At the conference, the parties will also discuss and propose a revised schedule for the pre-hearing and evidentiary hearing on the proposed plant.
The Beacon Solar Power Project is a concentrated solar electric generating facility. The plant will sit on a 2000 plus acre site at the western edge of the Mojave Desert four miles from California City and 15 miles north of the town of Mojave.
The project would use parabolic trough solar thermal technology to produce electrical power from a steam turbine generator, fed from a heat exchanger.
If licensed by the Energy Commission, the solar thermal facility will begin construction in mid- to late 2010, with commercial operations beginning in approximately the fourth quarter of 2012.
