Staff Workshop January 11 for Beacon Solar Energy Project
Staff of the California Energy Commission will hold a public workshop on the 250-megawatt Beacon Solar Energy Project in eastern Kern County. Members of the public are welcome to attend and offer comments.
When: Monday, January 11, 2010 beginning at 10 a.m.
Where: Hearing Room B, California Energy Commission, 1516 Ninth Street, Sacramento, California
Why: The workshop will discuss staff's analysis of the proposed project's environmental impacts and the applicant's suggested changes to some of staff's recommended Conditions of Certification in the Final Staff Assessment.
The Beacon Solar Power Project is a concentrated solar electric generating facility. The plant will sit on a 2000 plus acre site at the western edge of the Mojave Desert four miles from California City and 15 miles north of the town of Mojave.
The project would use parabolic trough solar thermal technology to produce electrical power from a steam turbine generator, fed from a heat exchanger.
If licensed by the Energy Commission, the solar thermal facility will begin construction in mid- to late 2010, with commercial operations beginning in approximately the fourth quarter of 2012.
