Goleta Glows in Energy Efficiency

The City of Goleta (Santa Barbara County) is going greener and saving money by installing new, energy efficient lights at various city-owned facilities.

Lighting fixtures at city hall were replaced with new T-8 lamps and ballasts which glow brighter, consume less energy and are longer lasting. Occupancy sensors were also installed to turn off lights when offices are not in use.

Four elementary schools within the Goleta Union School District also received new efficient lighting and occupancy sensors. In total, 27 incandescent exit signs were switched to Light Emitting-Diode (LEDs) and more than 200 occupancy sensors were installed at the schools. The city also replaced 84 existing streetlight fixtures to LEDs citywide.

In the move to go greener, Goleta is expected to save 129,000 kilowatt hours or $16,700, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 44.5 tons. The project, completed in May, was partially funded by a $159,293 Energy Efficient Conservation Block Grant of the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

Administered by the California Energy Commission, the federal grants are contributing to the energy efficiency goals of small cities and counties.

The California Energy Commission is the state's primary energy policy and planning agency.
