Demand Response R&D Symposium


The staff of the California Energy Commission will present a three-hour workshop describing the activities of the Commission's Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program's demand response (DR) research and development activities.

In addition to the formal presentations, an open-house featuring posters and demonstrations of the funded Research and Development activities will be displayed in the lobby of the California Energy Commission at 1516 Ninth Street (corner of Ninth and P Streets) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome to attend both events.

Purpose of the Workshop

The workshop will describe the activities of the demand response (DR) research and development program that was implemented following the California electricity crisis of 2000-2001. A primary focus of the Research and Development program is to support the vision that California needs a real-time demand-side infrastructure in order to respond to old and new supply-side problems. This DR infrastructure will need to be compatible with the operational requirements of California's Independent System Operator and the state's electric utility companies while serving the loads and needs of California's electricity customers.

The vision of a real-time DR infrastructure would join communications technology with dynamic tariffs to signal customers of changing economic and system conditions and inform system operators of customer response. The PIER DR R&D program is funding near, medium, and long-term R&D projects consistent with the above vision. The funded R&D leverages the work of other agencies and is focused on providing generic public interest solutions.

The speakers will include Joseph Desmond, Deputy Secretary for Energy, State of California; Dr. Arthur Rosenfeld, Commissioner, California Energy Commission; Professor Severin Borenstein, Director, University of California Energy Institute; Professor Paul Wright, Chair in Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley; Charles Goldman, Staff Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Thomas Yeh, Chief Technical Officer, Connected Energy Corp, and Mary Ann Piette, Research Director, Demand Response Research Center, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The topics will range from describing California's demand policy objectives and initiatives to the early results of PIER-funded R&D. Presenters will describe lessons learned by other states, shed capacities of large electrical loads, and emerging technologies that could have large positive economic and social impacts on California's citizens.

Registration is free, but pre-registration is requested.
