Notice of Staff Workshop
Meeting California's Electricity System Challenges
through Electricity Energy Storage

The staff of the California Energy Commission in cooperation with the US Department of Energy - Energy Storage Program will conduct a workshop to discuss the status of electricity energy storage technologies and their applicability for grid management, distribution system support, demand response, peak load reduction and integration of wind resources in California.

Thursday, February 24, 2005
10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION
1516 9th Street, Sacramento, CA
First Floor, Hearing Room A
(Wheelchair Accessible)

Purpose of the Workshop

This workshop presents the current status of electricity energy storage technologies, their potential applications in California, and their abilities to effectively meet the challenges faced by the California electrical system and end-users. Specifically, the workshop addresses how electricity energy storage technologies can help address the state's need for peak load reduction, electricity grid stability, demand response options, and integration of renewable energy.

Presentations will be made on national and international energy storage projects, their performance and their applicability to California. Speakers will include Joseph Desmond, Deputy Secretary for Energy, State of California; Dr. Imre Gyuk, Electricity Storage Program Manager, US Department of Energy; Dr. Robert Schainker, Electric Power Research Institute; David Hawkins, California Integrated System Operator (CA-ISO) and other speakers with experience in planning, developing or managing electricity energy storage projects.

The workshop agenda can be seen at

Background

Recent developments in electrical energy storage technologies, aided by advances in communications and control technologies, have improved the viability of storage as a means to protect the stability of the electricity grid. This workshop will provide California energy decision makers with current information on these emerging improvements that may help to protect the State's electricity resources.
