The Energy Commission staff is analyzing the City of Vernon's Application for Certification (AFC) for the proposed development of the Vernon Power Plant project. Staff has served the applicant three sets of data requests dated October 6, 2006, February 2, 2007, and April 24, 2007. The workshop will focus on staff's data requests in the areas of waste management and transmission system engineering and work toward resolving project issues. Other areas as necessary may be discussed. Before discussing individual technical areas, staff will explain the Energy Commission's permitting process. Staff's data requests can be found on the Energy Commission's website: http://www.energy.ca.gov/sitingcases/cityofvernon/documents/.

Following the workshop, staff will consider the comments it receives and will publish a Preliminary Staff Assessment containing its initial recommendations on the proposed project.

On June 30, 2006, the City of Vernon, submitted an AFC to construct and operate a nominal 943-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant, the Vernon Power Plant, in the City of Vernon. The proposed Vernon project site is located at the southeast corner of Fruitland and Boyle Avenues in the City of Vernon, Los Angeles County, in an area zoned for industrial uses. The proposed project site is a 13.7-acre portion of a 27-acre parcel that is currently being purchased the City of Vernon.

The Energy Commission is responsible for reviewing and ultimately approving or denying all thermal electric power plants, 50 MW and greater, proposed for construction in California. On September 14, 2006, the Energy Commission accepted the AFC as complete, which initiated Energy Commission staff's independent review of the proposed project.
