Notice of Staff Workshop on
Data Requests for the
Genesis Solar Energy Project

The California Energy Commission staff will conduct a workshop for the proposed Genesis Solar Energy Project to discuss staff's biological and water data requests and to work towards resolving issues. All interested agencies and members of the public are invited to participate.

The workshop will be held:

MONDAY, November 23, 2009
1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

TUESDAY, November 24, 2009 (if needed)
9:00 a.m.

California Energy Commission
Hearing Room B
1516 9th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814-5512
(Wheelchair Accessible)

Call-in Number (toll free): 888-946-3805 (pass code: 18255)

The purpose of the workshop is to allow staff, the applicant, interested agencies, and the public to discuss staff's data requests issued on November 13, 2009, and to work towards resolving project issues. Subjects to be discussed include: Alternatives, Biological Resources, Cultural Resources and Soil & Water Resources. Other technical areas of the data requests may be discussed as necessary. We anticipate completing the Workshop on November 23rd. However, in order to preserve the option of continuing the Workshop on November 24th, we are noticing both days (those calling-in should check at 9AM on November 24th to see if the Workshop has been continued from the following day, or not).

On August 31, 2009, Genesis Solar, LLC, (applicant) submitted an Application for Certification (AFC) to the California Energy Commission to develop the Genesis Solar

Energy Project (Project Genesis), a solar electric generating facility with a nominal net electrical output of 250 megawatts. On September 30, 2009, the California Energy Commission found Project Genesis data inadequate in nine sections including; air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, geological resources, noise, paleontological resources, soils, transmission system design, visual resources and water resources. On October 12, 2009, the applicant submitted a Data Adequacy Supplement to the AFC, covering areas earlier determined as incomplete. This Supplement was evaluated by staff, and subsequently, at the Energy Commission's November 4, 2009 Business Meeting, the Energy Commission found the AFC complete, beginning Energy Commission staff's analysis of the proposed project.

Project Genesis is a concentrated solar electric generating facility that would consist of two, independent solar electric generating facilities with a nominal net electrical output of 125 megawatts (MW) each, for a total net electrical output of 250 MW. The project would utilize solar parabolic trough technology to activate a heat transfer fluid. This heat transfer fluid provides a high-temperature energy source which is used to generate steam. As this steam expands through the turbine generators, electrical power is generated.
