Notice of January 6, 2010 Data Request Workshop
Genesis Solar Energy Project

The California Energy Commission staff conducted a workshop for the proposed Genesis Solar Energy Project on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 to discuss staff's data requests and to work towards resolving issues that could impact the schedule. The discussion of the hydrological and geomorphologic aspects of the project proposal needs to be continued to a later date. Therefore, a continued Genesis Workshop will be held:

Monday, January 11, 2010
2:00PM - 4:00PM (Palm Springs)

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
7:00 AM-4:00 PM (starting in Palm Springs
and traveling to the project site)

Bureau of Land Management

Palm Springs, CA 92262

(Wheelchair Accessible)

Call-in Number (toll free): 888-970-4193 (pass code: 22834)

The purpose of the workshop is to allow staff, the applicant, interested agencies, and the public the ability to continue discussing staff's data requests, and to work towards resolving project issues related to Biological Resources and Soil & Water Resources. Specifically, staff, agencies, the applicant and other parties will discuss hydrological and geomorphologic aspects of the project proposal on January 11, 2010, and will make plans to conduct a walking field visit of the proposed Genesis project site the following day (Tuesday, January 12, 2010, beginning at 7AM). The January 12, 2010 field visit party will depart from BLM's parking lot (1201 Bird Center Drive in Palm Springs) at 7AM (see map for BLM location). *NOTE: The project site is several miles from the nearest existing road, and thus will entail extensive hiking by foot to reach.

On August 31, 2009, Genesis Solar, LLC, (applicant) submitted an Application for Certification (AFC) to the California Energy Commission to develop the Genesis Solar Energy Project (Project Genesis).

Project Genesis is a concentrated solar electric generating facility that would consist of two, independent solar electric generating facilities with a nominal net electrical output of 125 megawatts (MW) each, for a total net electrical output of 250 MW. The project would utilize solar parabolic trough technology to activate a heat transfer fluid. This heat transfer fluid provides a high-temperature energy source which is used to generate steam. As this steam expands through the turbine generators, electrical power is generated.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), under Federal law, is responsible for processing requests to authorize proposed projects, associated transmission lines and other appurtenant facilities on land it manages. The BLM is currently reviewing Genesis' proposed Plan of Development (POD) and jointly reviewing the Application for Certification (AFC) that has been submitted to the Energy Commission for the proposed development of this project.
