DRIVING TO CLEANER TRANSPORTATION
CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE

The California Department of Food and Agriculture is making strides to create the first ever testing process for hydrogen fuel.

The California Energy Commission awarded more than $4 million in grants to the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Division of Measurement Standards (DMS). The money was used to test hydrogen fuel quality, design a method to accurately meter and dispense hydrogen, and certify hydrogen retailers.

DMS and its partner—the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)—have built a one-of-a-kind mobile device to test hydrogen refueling dispensers.

This project exemplifies California’s commitment to commercializing zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) that use hydrogen as a fuel. It also supports the state’s plan to diversify transportation fuels and utilize domestic sources of energy. Automobile manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota plan to roll out fuel cell vehicles in the 2015 to 2017 time frame, and this project supports California’s vision to expand that market.

Benefits

  • The project helps prepare the market for a new, environmentally friendly alternative fuel.

  • DMS staff will test 10 stations between 2014 and 2015.

  • Fuel cell vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions and reduce greenhouse gases by 40 to 50 percent compared to conventional gasoline vehicles, depending on the percentage of renewable hydrogen dispensed.
