UCSD ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING PROJECT

Developing and implementing an electric vehicle charging system that will be incorporated into a campus microgrid.

Sixteen electric vehicle charging stations will be installed throughout campus at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Alternative Energy Systems Consulting, Inc. contracted with the Energy Commission for the installation of five Level 2 chargers for fleet operations, eight Level 2 chargers for workplace use, and three DC Fast Chargers for general use. Level 2 electric vehicle charging systems typically provide 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charging for a passenger vehicle, while DC Fast Charging can add 50 to 70 miles of range in about 20 minutes.

The project uses a Vehicle-to-Grid charging system in connection with UCSD’s microgrid—a small-scale, centralized electrical system. This means vehicles using the charging stations can feed electricity back to the microgrid or delay charging during periods of high electricity demand. The microgrid serves the university community of 45,000 people by efficiently managing real-time demand and supplying energy at a lower cost with less pollution than the conventional, larger grid. The UCSD microgrid generates more than 90 percent of the electricity used on campus each year, saving the University over $800,000 in utility costs per month.

UCSD campus has a large, diverse range of electric vehicle charging stations compared to other universities in the world. The university has a fleet of more than 800 vehicles that have been converted to near-zero emission vehicles and even created an electric vehicle leasing program for students, faculty, and staff.

Benefits

  • Electric vehicles connected to UCSD’s microgrid produce only 51 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per mile, compared to 480 grams per mile for the average gasoline-powered car.

  • Use of the electric electric vehicles instead of gasoline vehicles is lowering greenhouse gas emissions; in a little less than one year, the project has lowered greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1.39 tons of carbon dioxide.

  • Electric vehicles using UCSD charging stations feed electricity back to the campus microgrid and can delay charging during periods of high electricity demand.
