Designing and manufacturing
zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles.

Proterra is a world leader in designing and manufacturing zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. Its Fast Charge bus features the TerraVolt™ FC battery pack, recharging in less than 10 minutes, with a nominal range of up to 50 miles between charge events. The newly-introduced, extended range Proterra® Catalyst™ XR vehicle features the TerraVolt™ XR battery pack, with a nominal range of up to 180 miles per charge, recharging in less than 90 minutes.

In April, 2015, the California Energy Commission awarded a $3 million grant to Proterra to fund the design, development, and construction of Proterra's new zero-emission, battery-electric transit bus advanced manufacturing facility in the San Gabriel Valley in California. By June 30, 2015, Proterra had raised an additional $55 million from private investors and received purchase orders from local transit authorities for the electric buses. During the term of the Energy Commission grant, Proterra is estimated to manufacture and sell 424 buses, resulting in a reduction of more than 900 million pounds of carbon dioxide over the lifetime of the bus.

  • Proterra buses produce zero tailpipe emissions and have zero direct local impact on pollution.
  • Local transit authorities can save up to $135,000 in maintenance-related costs over the lifetime of the bus, since there is neither a conventional engine nor exhaust system.
  • Unlike CNG, diesel, and hybrid vehicles, Proterra's zero-emission battery-electric buses can travel between 5-7 times further at ~22.3 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) versus 3–4 MPG for these alternative fuel buses.
  • Charging Proterra buses costs as low as 19 cents per mile, compared to 60–85 cents per mile for fueling CNG, diesel, and hybrid heavy-duty vehicles.
  • The newly developed extended range version of the CATALYST™ recently traveled 258 miles on a single charge at Michelin's Laurens Proving Grounds.
