Eureka City Schools submitted an application to receive grant funding under the California Energy Commission Solicitation GFO-17-607 to replace four old diesel school buses. Eureka City Schools was awarded funding for one vehicle-to-grid ready electric school buses and the supporting electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Eureka City Schools purchased one electric school bus and installed one charger through the California Energy Commission. The buses were placed into service on May 13, 2021, and districts were offered workforce training to help support the successful deployment of the new electric fleet. The old, diesel-powered buses were also dismantled and removed from service. This project found that the electric school bus reduced annual emissions by 29.1 short tons of carbon dioxide, .071 short tons of carbon monoxide, .027 short tons of hydrocarbons, .018 short tons of particulate matter 2.5, and .310 short tons of oxides of nitrogen and that the electric school bus had an annual cost savings of $14,890.45.
