Amazon.com Services, LLC (Amazon) is a Seattle, Washington based company that sells various Amazon Basics branded products including plumbing fittings, lighting products, battery chargers, ceiling fans, and portable air conditioners.  Amazon sold or offered for sale these products in California, from July 2016 to March 2021.

This case was the result of an investigation performed by California Energy Commission (CEC) staff. CEC’s investigation and testing process identified that Amazon was offering for sale a lavatory faucet that did not meet the efficiency standard and was not certified to the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDbS) and various other products that were not certified to MAEDbS.

To settle this matter, Amazon executed a Settlement Agreement with CEC on April 6, 2022, for $615,220.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). Amazon has also agreed to a compliance plan to stop selling certain products and test and certify all remaining products to MAEDbS before continuing to sell in California.
