Best Buy Stores, L.P. and BestBuy.com, LLC (Best Buy) is a company that manufactures miscellaneous refrigeration products, cooking and washing products, non-commercial refrigerators, and non-central AC & HP products based in Richfield, Minnesota. Best Buy sold or offered for sale wine coolers, microwave ovens, non-commercial refrigerators, and portable air conditioners in California, from May 2021 to August 2025.
This case was the result of an investigation performed by California Energy Commission (CEC) staff. CEC’s investigation and testing process identified that Best Buy was manufacturing and offering for sale Insignia wine coolers, microwave ovens, non-commercial refrigerators, and portable air conditioners that were not certified to the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDbS).
To resolve this matter, Best Buy executed a Settlement Agreement with CEC on January 29, 2026, for $246,566.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount as required in Public Resources Code section 25402.11. Best Buy has also agreed to a compliance plan to certify all models to MAEDbS before continuing to sell in California.
