Illinois Tool Works, Inc. (ITW) is a Glenview, Illinois, based company that manufactures rechargeable battery operated products. ITW sold or offered for sale rechargeable battery operated products in California, from February 2013 to June 2018.

This case was the result of an investigation performed by California Energy Commission (CEC) staff. CEC's investigation and testing process identified that ITW was manufacturing and offering for sale rechargeable battery operated products containing small battery charger systems that did not meet the efficiency standard, failed the marking requirement, and were not certified to the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEDbS).

To settle this matter, ITW executed a Settlement Agreement with CEC on January 29, 2020, for $300,000.00. The penalty monies are deposited into the Appliance Efficiency Enforcement Subaccount established by SB 454 of 2011 (Pavley). ITW has also agreed to a compliance plan to discontinue sales of some of the non-compliant models and redesign the other non-compliant model to meet the efficiency standard, add the appropriate marking, and certify all models to MAEDbS before continuing to sell in California.
